چکیده

Regular bursts of electric field radiation pulses produced by three multiple-stroke cloud-to-ground discharges recorded in 1991 at the NASA Kennedy Space Center are analyzed. The bursts are similar in the number of pulses per burst and inter-pulse intervals to the “multiple burst” component (so-called component H) of the standard lightning environment for the design and testing of aerospace vehicles [l]. The relation of the regular pulse bursts to various lightning processes is discussed. Comparison of the pulse bursts in ground flashes to similar bursts in cloud flashes is given.

ursts of Pulses in Lightning magnetic Radiation: Observations and lications for Lightning Test Standards

Bursts of regular microsecond-scale electric field pulses produced by three multiple-stroke cloud-to-ground discharges (a total of 2782 pulses) and by three cloud discharges (a total of 1436 pulses), all recorded within 20 km or so at the NASA Kennedy Space Center, are analyzed. The regular pulse bursts are similar in both cloud-to-ground and cloud discharges. A burst is characterized by some t...

On phenomenology of compact intracloud lightning discharges

[1] We examined wideband electric fields, electric and magnetic field derivatives, and narrowband VHF (36 MHz) radiation bursts produced by 157 compact intracloud discharges (CIDs). These poorly understood lightning events appear to be the strongest natural producers of HF‐VHF radiation. All the events transported negative charge upward (or lowered positive charge), 150 were located by the U.S....

Pulse trains that are characteristic of preliminary breakdown in cloud-to-ground lightning but are not followed by return stroke pulses

[1] In this study, we identify and examine electric field pulse trains that are characteristic of preliminary breakdown in negative cloud-to-ground discharges but are not followed by return stroke waveforms. We assume that such trains are manifestations of the initiation of downward negative stepped leaders that fail to propagate all the way to the ground and refer to these events as ‘‘attempte...

Regular Pulse Trains in Chaotic pulse Bursts

Electric field pulse bursts generated by lightning flashes are considered as sources of high radio frequencies. In this study, an analysis of pulse bursts in electric field records of 30 negative cloud to ground lightning flashes recorded in the southern coastal area of Sri Lanka is presented. Sixty-four percent (64%) of pulse bursts are typical chaotic pulse trains (CPT). Twenty-four percent (...

Subionospheric propagation and peak currents of preliminary breakdown pulses before negative cloud-to-ground lightning discharges

We analyze broadband electromagnetic measurements of pulse sequences occurring prior to first return strokes of negative cloud-to-ground lightning flashes. Signals generated by lightning discharges were recorded close to the thunderstorm by a magnetic field receiver and traveled up to 600km to three distant electric field receivers. We found that amplitudes of observed preliminary breakdown pul...
